Theory Test

The theory test is the philosophy of driving and plays a pivotal part in your ability to drive. This page is designed to give you a good idea of what to expect from the test itself.

What kind of questions will I be asked?

Your test will cover a range of subjects including:

  • Driver attitude
  • Environmental driving
  • The effects of alcohol, medication and tiredness
  • Traffic signs

The majority of the questions will require one answer to be selected though some may ask for up to 4 of a possible 6 answers.

What is the pass mark for the Theory Test?

The pass mark for the theory test is 43 correct answers out of 50.

What documents do I need to bring?

You will need your signed driving licence and suitable photographic ID, or both parts of your signed photo card licence and your booking number.

How much does it cost to take the Theory Test?

The standard fee for a car or motorcycle theory test currently stands at £23

What happens if I pass the theory section but fail on the hazard perception part?

Both elements must be passed in one sitting to successfully complete the test. If one element is failed, they must both be retaken for the full fee.
